The AMSTI Math program deepens teacher content knowledge in mathematics and pedagogy to produce student mastery of standards in the Alabama Course of Study: Mathematics. The vision includes students involved in rigorous and meaningful mathematical tasks so teachers can use student work samples and dialogue to assess and refine student thinking. Through a standards-based approach, AMSTI Math will equip teachers to set learning targets and success criteria; instruct utilizing research-based, concrete, hands-on methods; assess and advance student thinking by posing purposeful questions; provide formative feedback to students, and collect evidence to inform teachers’ next-step instructional decisions. AMSTI Math training will take place within the structure of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) in order to create a seamless connection between the foundation, follow-up support during the school year, and building the capacity for local sustainability.
