GLOBE/Science on a Sphere®

AMSTI-GLOBE/Science On a Sphere® Field Trip

Plan an exciting study of our Earth as a system, using the GLOBE Earth System Poster Activities, and topping it off with a visit to McWane Science Center!  The GLOBE Earth System visualizations are available for Science on a Sphere®.  Your students can see the data come to life as the Sphere displays the animations.

The AMSTI-GLOBE/Science on a Sphere® activities have already been aligned to the Alabama Course of Study: Science for Grades 6-8.  Everything you need is right here.

To get started:

After your students have completed the GLOBE Earth System Poster activities in their classroom and recorded their observations in their Science Notebooks, the additional activities sheet has suggestions for student observations using the Sphere and their Notebooks.  Students should plan to carry their Science Notebooks to the Center.

*The small poster is a color version (340 KB) of the GLOBE Earth System Poster which can be printed on an office copier (on 11x17" paper). The large poster is a full-size color version (51.9 MB) of the GLOBE Earth System Poster which can be downloaded for printing. The lowres version of the poster is the same size as the large one, but at a lower resolution and smaller file size (2.4 MB).

NOAA Science on a Sphere®

http://sos.noaa.gov/

Science On a Sphere (SOS)® is a room sized, global display system that uses computers and video projectors to display planetary data onto a six foot diameter sphere, analogous to a giant animated globe. Researchers at NOAA developed Science On a Sphere® as an educational tool to help illustrate Earth System science to people of all ages. Animated images of atmospheric storms, climate change, and ocean temperature can be shown on the sphere, which is used to explain what are sometimes complex environmental processes, in a way that is simultaneously intuitive and captivating.

McWane Science Center

Fun and learning never end at McWane Science Center, a nonprofit, hands-on museum and IMAX® Dome Theater. Four floors of interactive exhibits celebrate science and wonder — from an amazing collection of dinosaurs to innovative environmental showcases, imaginative early childhood playgrounds, and an awe-inspiring aquarium. The energy and excitement of discovery spring to life through an extensive lineup of science demonstrations performed daily by talented educators. The adventure intensifies in the IMAX® Dome Theater, where wide-eyed visitors experience the sights and sounds of breathtaking films on a 5-story-tall screen surrounded by 3 tons of high-intensity speakers.

The GLOBE Program

www.globe.gov

The Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) program is a worldwide hands-on, primary and secondary school-based science and education program. GLOBE's vision promotes and supports students, teachers and scientists to collaborate on inquiry-based investigations of the environment and the Earth system working in close partnership with NASA, NOAA and NSF Earth System Science Projects (ESSP's) in study and research about the dynamics of Earth's environment.
