State Superintendent to bill BP - Friday, June 11, 2010

 Associated Press - June 10, 2010 1:24 PM ET

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama's state school superintendent says he plans to bill BP for the loss of state taxes that support public education.

Superintendent Joe Morton held a news conference Thursday, where he said the oil spill's impact on Alabama's tourism and fishing industries is hurting tax collections, particularly sales, income and utility taxes that go toward public education.

Morton says he will use economic experts to calculate the loss each month and send BP a bill. He's also promising to sue if he's rebuffed by BP.

Morton says the spill is wreaking havoc on the Gulf coast economy, but it can't be allowed to undermine public schools
